Benchmarks
A quote is reasonable relative to a scope, and the scope is what you have not been shown. The useful question is not whether the number is high but what it assumes, who does the work, and what is excluded.
The assumption list converts an unverifiable number into one you can reason about.
Exclusions explain most of the gap between two quotes for what looks like the same project.
A named senior engineer and an unnamed junior are different products at the same price.
You do not need technical knowledge to ask these, and the answers are more informative than any benchmark table.
Almost all of it is scope, not greed. A quote for 'a members area' can legitimately mean a login page and a static account view, or it can mean roles, permissions, billing changes, email notifications, an audit trail and a support process.
The rest is seniority and location. An experienced engineer costs more per hour and frequently less per outcome, because the estimate is not padded to cover uncertainty they do not have.
There are patterns that suggest a number inflated for reasons unrelated to your project.
The cheap quote is usually the expensive one, and the tells are consistent.
Not a reliable one. Published ranges compare projects that share a label and nothing else. The four questions above discriminate far better than any table.
Share the assumptions, not the numbers. Numbers invite matching; assumptions produce a corrected scope, which is what you actually need.
