Specialist knowledge is a real cost saving

Framework problems have a strong tendency to be either fifteen minutes or three days, with very little in between, and which one it turns out to be depends almost entirely on whether the person has seen it before.

That is the argument for paying more per hour on a stack-specific problem. Someone who recognises the failure mode charges for an afternoon; someone learning it charges for a week and may still arrive at a workaround rather than a fix.

What to send when you ask for help

The quality of the first reply scales directly with the quality of what you send.

  • The exact error, copied as text rather than described.
  • Versions: the framework, the runtime, the relevant libraries.
  • What changed before it started, including dependency updates.
  • Whether it happens locally, in staging, in production, or only one of those.
  • What you have already tried, so nobody repeats it.

Workaround or fix

For an urgent problem a workaround is often correct — get past it now, understand it later. The failure is not choosing the workaround, it is forgetting that you did.

Whenever one is applied, get it written down with the reason. Undocumented workarounds accumulate into a codebase where nobody can tell which strange decisions were deliberate.

Upgrades are the most common hidden cause

A large share of framework problems arrive without anyone having written any code, when a dependency updated and changed behaviour. This is why the question 'what changed?' is more useful than it sounds when the honest answer feels like 'nothing'.

Keeping dependency updates deliberate and separate from feature work makes these far easier to trace, and is worth the small ongoing discipline.

Why does a framework bug cost more than a feature?

Because the time is spent understanding rather than building, and that time varies enormously with familiarity. Someone who has seen the failure before charges for an afternoon; someone meeting it for the first time may spend a week.

Is it worth paying a specialist rate for one small bug?

Usually yes, for exactly that reason. On stack-specific problems the higher rate typically produces a lower total, because the hours collapse.
